When looking to buy books online, start at Booko.com

At 366 pages this book is a hefty read, but boy is it thorough, starting with protocols for using resistive bands and for us non sailors, knot tying techniques are included.

Caroline is a Physiotherapist and with that in mind you can appreciate the level of detail, specificity to conditions and inclusion of case study material. Case study one is particularly interesting as it reinforces that muscle recruitment patterns can be altered in clients with pain from an injury, and therefore not to assume that what an ex is prescribing to do is exactly how the client is loading their prime movers. This can be particularly be seen with shoulder ex where palpation, close observation of client movement and feedback on ‘where they feel it’ can cue you into this. In a large mat class situation without these things happening, you can see where things might not be quite right for some
clients.

There are umpteen repertoire options using bands in many different positions. Standing, sitting, lying in bed, using a racket and on it goes. Starting with at least 10 different stretches this book provides very clear guidance to clients, presenting the material in copyable pages to allow for notes to client re number of reps etc.

Watch a six minute online demonstration of using a band at Videojug.

I have used this book many times in planning mat sessions, researching for clients needing very specific exercises to do in their spare time and when putting together a home program for client with patellofemoral problems.

Once you are confident your client is accurately implementing core stabilisation techniques, has a consistent awareness of good posture and you have watched them undertake each exercise and corrected as necessary, it would be ideal for home use. Great tool for new instructor as it groups exercises to some conditions and provides life like line drawings. All round a fab book, used many times over and shared among colleagues.

We are a lot behind the 8-ball here when it comes to having all the Australian Pilates resources together on one website. But one clever cookie has put an end to that sad state of affairs. Look what launched last weekend at the Polestar Pilates conference in Sydney:

Instructors, studios, training facilities and suppliers will all find a home on PilatesSource.com.au.

Get yourself listed — you may choose a freebie that’s cheap and cheerful, or a real profile-booster where you can promote your socks off for as little as $90 a year for an instructor, $120 a year for studios and suppliers.

Find it fast — PilatesSource has a clever search function to help consumers looking for Pilates nearby, based on locality, type of service and name. Enter a postcode or suburb name, part of a business name or an instructor’s name and it’ll take you straight there.

Homepage changes daily — Popular searches and new listings are rotated through the home page, giving everyone a fair chance at homepage exposure. There is also a single advertising banner available on the right side of the page you can book on a cost-per-impression or per-day basis.

Find that supplier — If you’re running a busy studio and need to find your nearest equipment supplier, PilatesSource.com.au will even show you where your nearest suppliers are and give you a map you can print out so you can duck out at lunch time.

I am bloody well going to, I am going to have my Surgeon, Kylie Snook and Breast Care Nurse, Clare Martin come along and give them a workout that opens their eyes to Pilates, and shows them how it can be relevant to their patients. This way I can promote Pilates to the medicos, give our industry some great PR and show them that all the patients they see can be assisted in their recovery. Not only on the physical level but for the role it plays in lifting your spirits. Can’t help myself but fly the flag whenever possible.

I got going on my Pilates inspired Breast Care recovery DVD program (yay Fiona Eakin) four weeks after a double mastectomy. Six weeks post surgery I now have just about full range of motion in both arms, with no lymph swelling. What a blessing it has been and always will be.
