June 25 – Just got back home from our inaugural Pilates study group meeting for our local area. I wanted to find a way to meet more local Instructors, share our resources and knowledge and most importantly, work with the newer instructors amongst us to mentor them, providing them with ongoing learning opportunities in an informal, interactive environment. I am very passionate about the learning that happens after they have graduated, once the clients are in front of them ready to be ‘taught’.
Today we shared our first topic, the pelvic floor. One of our local women’s health Physio/Pilates teacher kindly facilitated the session, and got us all thinking about how to assess the needs of a client with PF problems and then applying cueing techniques to exercises.
It was interactive, it was useful, it was easy to organise (all done via email) and I am really pleased we got it off the ground. We plan to meet every 2-3 months and take turns running the sessions, based on a vote by the attendees on preferred material. I am up next and am thinking of offering a choice of the following topics, neck and shoulder management in Pilates, teaching the post mastectomy clients and the challenges of the gluteal amnesia syndrome.
We charge a small amount for attendance, which is shared between presenter and the host studio owner for the afternoon tea, and use of the space. With a rotation of venues, this will be a little extra revenue for the hard work and organisation put in by presenters and owners. We are even investigating having the program recognised for CEC approval by the two Pilates Assns represented there today.
