New blog post from Physio Mike Reinold about the imbalances between upper and lower traps, in summary,

“What this means is that the upper trapezius is a little more than 3 times more active than the lower trapezius during scapular plane elevation in patients with subacromial impingement.”

For further reading, pg 115 pf this journal article from Mike, published 2009 in the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy (JOSPT) lists the exercises recommended for glenohumeral and scapulothoracic musculature.

In addition, if it’s functional anatomy you are after, this article gives a very detailed explanation of the function of the shoulder musculature. Perhaps don’t read it with a glass of red in hand, it needs your full attention.
