At 366 pages this book is a hefty read, but boy is it thorough, starting with protocols for using resistive bands and for us non sailors, knot tying techniques are included.
Caroline is a Physiotherapist and with that in mind you can appreciate the level of detail, specifity to conditions and inclusion of case study material. Case study one is particularly interesting as it reinforces that muscle recruitment patterns can be altered in clients with pain from an injury, and therefore not to assume that what an ex is prescribing to do is exactly how the client is loading their prime movers. This can be particularly be seen with shoulder ex where palpation, close observation of client movement and feedback on ‘where they feel it’ can cue you into this. In a large mat class situation without these things happening, you can see where things might not be quite right for some participants.
There are umpteen repertoire options using bands in many different positions. Standing, sitting, lying in bed, using a racket and on it goes. Starting with at least 10 different stretches this book provides very clear guidance to clients, presenting the material in copyable pages to allow for notes to client re number of reps etc.
I have used this book many times in planning mat sessions, researching for clients needing very specific exercises to do in their spare time and when putting together a home program for client with patellofemoral problems.
Once you are confident your client is accurately implementing core stabilisation techniques, has a consistent awareness of good posture and you have watched them undertake each exercise and corrected as necessary, it would be ideal for home use. Great tool for new instructor as it groups exercises to some conditions and provides life like line drawings. All round a fab book, used many times over and shared among colleagues.
As an aside, if you want to see a six minute online demonstration of using a band see videojug.com. More on this site in ‘Online Resources’.
One of my favourite book sites, Booko.com will help you compare price and find the book.
